Artistic consultancy
Michael Fine advises orchestras, opera companies, festivals and concert series on the artistic choices that shape their identity and their relationship with audiences. He brings together deep repertoire knowledge, long experience of working with leading artists and conductors, and a practical understanding of how ambitious musical ideas must work within the realities of an institution.
His perspective has been formed in the recording studio, in senior roles at Deutsche Grammophon and Koch International Classics, and through artistic appointments with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Gergiev Festival Rotterdam, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Seoul Philharmonic. From a single question about repertoire or casting to the development of a season, festival or long-term artistic direction, Michael offers independent, thoughtful advice grounded in the music.

Independent Advice for Each Institution
Every organisation has its own history, musicians, audience, resources and ambitions. Good consultancy begins by understanding those things clearly. Michael does not arrive with a formula to impose. He listens, asks the right questions and helps artistic and management teams make choices that are distinctive, coherent and achievable.
His work can support an established organisation looking for a fresh perspective, a new artistic leader defining a direction, or a team navigating a period of change. The aim is always practical: to turn artistic ambition into programmes and projects that musicians can believe in and audiences will want to experience.
How Michael Fine Can Help
Artistic planning and programming
Developing a season, festival or concert series requires more than assembling attractive individual programmes. Michael helps organisations create a clear artistic thread across a season, balance familiar and less familiar repertoire, make intelligent use of their musical forces, and build programmes that express a recognisable identity.
Repertoire development
Michael draws on an unusually broad knowledge of orchestral, operatic and chamber repertoire. He can help identify works that suit a particular ensemble, soloist, venue or occasion, explore neglected repertoire, plan anniversaries and thematic projects, and consider where new commissions or contemporary music can add genuine purpose.
Artist selection and casting
The right artist must suit the music, the institution and the moment. Michael advises on conductors, soloists, singers and creative collaborators, considering not only reputation but artistic fit, repertoire, working relationships and the contribution each appointment can make to the wider programme.
Artistic identity and audience connection
Distinctive programming can strengthen an organisation's public identity without underestimating its audience. Michael helps teams consider how repertoire, artists and the shape of a season can tell a coherent story, welcome curiosity and create a stronger connection between the institution, its musicians and its public.
Recording and media strategy
Drawing on decades at the highest level of the classical recording industry, Michael can advise on the artistic case for a recording, repertoire and artist choices, project structure, label conversations and how a recording fits within an organisation's broader goals. Where required, this advice can continue into production and post-production.
Leadership transitions and special projects
Michael can provide an experienced independent view during an artistic leadership search or transition. He also advises on one-off projects such as anniversary seasons, festival concepts, tours, commissions and recording initiatives, helping teams test an idea, sharpen its purpose and plan the artistic detail.
Ways to Work Together
A focused consultation
A conversation or short review for a defined question, such as a programme, repertoire choice, casting decision or proposed recording.
A project-based engagement
Advice over the development of a season, festival, appointment process or special project, with meetings and written recommendations agreed to suit the work.
Ongoing artistic counsel
Regular independent support for an artistic director, music director, chief executive or programming team across a season or a period of organisational development.
Each engagement is shaped around the organisation and the decision it needs to make.
